Black Violet Tarot
The Black Violet Tarot is an 80-card deck rooted in Art Nouveau aesthetics, illustrated entirely in black and white with fine, expressive line work. It offers a female-centered interpretation of the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, and its striking imagery plays freely with contrasts: whimsy and grief, novelty and nostalgia, darkness and lightness. Like the flower it's named after, the deck is built around the idea that opposites don't cancel each other out — they enrich each other.
The deck was created during a deeply significant period in artist Heidi Phelps's life, as she became a mother while also losing her own mother to cancer. That backdrop of layered, simultaneous experience is woven into the visual language of the cards themselves.

Heidi Phelps is an American writer and artist from Washington, DC. The Black Violet Tarot grew directly from a personal time of profound transition — the arrival of motherhood and the loss of her own mother. Her artistic influences range from Edward Gorey and Frida Kahlo to Victorian mourning imagery, vintage sewing patterns, and the surrealist drawings of Salvador Dali. She lives with her husband, daughter, and two cats.
