The Alchemical Tarot of Marseille

Gemaakt door Robert M. Place
Uitgegeven door Hermes Publications

Robert M. Place's Alchemical Tarot of Marseille is a scholarly and visually striking work that reveals the Hermetic philosophy embedded in the traditional Marseille structure. Each trump card carries a quotation from the ancient Hermetica, translated by Walter Scott in 1924, and these passages do not merely decorate the cards but actively illuminate the meaning of the imagery, making the underlying philosophical framework visible to careful readers.

The four minor suits are aligned with the four alchemical elements, earth to coins, water to cups, air to swords, and fire to staffs, and the World card is identified with the Philosopher's Stone itself. Place brings both the eye of a working artist and the mind of a tarot historian to this project, and the result is a Marseille deck that rewards serious study.
