Wiener Secession Tarot

Gemaakt door Ditha Moser
Uitgegeven door Llewellyn Publications

Originally designed in 1906 by Ditha Moser, this deck is a landmark of early twentieth-century graphic design. Moser worked in the Jugendstil tradition, the German-speaking world's equivalent of Art Nouveau, with its preference for geometric clarity, straight lines, and the interplay of simple shapes. The trump cards feature toy wooden soldiers depicted in a variety of scenes, an approach that is both formally rigorous and charmingly strange.

This limited edition, numbered and capped at 2,999 copies, is a faithful reproduction of the 1906 original with excellent card stock and packaging. It contains 54 full-color cards. For anyone interested in the history of tarot design or the Secession movement more broadly, this is a genuinely important artifact.

Over de maker

Ditha Moser was an Austrian graphic artist who studied at the Academy for Applied Arts in Vienna under Carl Otto Czeschka and Josef Hoffmann. She was married to the designer Koloman Moser from 1905 to 1918 and played an instrumental role in supporting his work, including providing funding for the establishment of the Wiener Werkstatte design workshop. Her 1906 tarot is recognized as a triumph of graphic design. She also produced a series of calendars exploring biblical and mythological themes between 1908 and 1913, several of which are preserved at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Her artistic output was limited by the restricted opportunities available to women of her era, domestic responsibilities, and the disruptions of World War I.
